Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Environmental sustainability has emerged as a pressing global concern, requiring collective action from individuals, communities, and governments. In this context, print media serves as a crucial tool for mobilizing communities, raising awareness, and advocating for sustainable environmental practices. In Bida Local Government, Niger State, where issues such as deforestation, waste management, and climate change are prevalent, print media plays a vital role in educating the populace and fostering community action (Garba & Musa, 2024). Newspapers and magazines provide platforms for environmental experts, activists, and policymakers to disseminate information, share success stories, and propose solutions. Research indicates that print media campaigns have the potential to influence behavioral changes and enhance community participation in environmental initiatives (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). However, challenges such as limited accessibility, lack of environmental focus in media content, and funding constraints may hinder the effectiveness of print media in achieving these goals. This study explores the role of print media in mobilizing communities for environmental sustainability in Bida.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite growing environmental challenges in Bida Local Government, public awareness and community participation in sustainability initiatives remain low. Print media, which has the potential to serve as an agent of change, often faces issues such as limited penetration in rural areas, inadequate coverage of environmental topics, and a lack of collaboration with stakeholders. These challenges impede the media’s capacity to drive meaningful community action. This study addresses these issues by examining the contributions and constraints of print media in mobilizing communities for environmental sustainability in Bida.
